Autumn Weekends in the Mountains

Leaf Peeping, Laughter, & Late Nights

Every year, as the air turns crisp and the trees start to glow with golds, oranges, and reds, I pack up my camera and head north.  The past two years, I’ve spent a fall weekend in Sunday River, Maine, and it’s become something I look forward to all year. It’s become a cherished tradition - a weekend getaway with friends to soak in the best of fall, both through the lens and in life.

We rent a cozy house overlooking the mountains - complete with a hot tub and sauna :) - the perfect place to unwind and slow down from our busy lives. Our days start slowly with mugs of coffee and sunlight filtering through amber leaves, and usually end with board games around the table, the scent of something delicious cooking on the grill, and laughter echoing through the cabin.

Of course, the main event is always leaf peeping. Sunday River is a photographer’s dream this time of year - rolling hills painted in fiery hues with trails that wind through forests bursting with color. One of my favorite parts of the weekend is taking the chairlift up the mountain. As you rise above the treetops, a patchwork of beautiful bright colors stretches out in every direction. From the top, we’ll often wander a few trails, cameras in hand, trying to capture that fleeting magic before winter sets in. This year, we were greeted by a field of delicate wildflowers at the top of the mountain - a small, unexpected surprise that made the view even sweeter.

There’s something about fall in Maine that feels both grounding and invigorating. Maybe it’s the chill in the air, or maybe it’s the reminder to appreciate the beauty while it’s here. For me, it’s a season that always inspires creativity and connection.

By the end of the weekend, my memory card was full, our hearts were full, and we’re already talking about next year’s trip.

With Love,

LC
